If I already have passed NCLEX-RN, can I register right away?
Even if you have already passed the NCLEX-RN, any IEN applicant who has never been registered to practise as an RN in Canada must submit documents and credentials to the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) for verification and assessment.
I have been told I need to take mandatory courses. Are they still required if I have already passed the NCLEX-RN?
Yes, the courses are still mandatory even if you have already passed the NCLEX-RN. The purpose of additional courses and mandatory learning activities is to help you adapt to working as an RN in a new practice environment. There are many challenges associated with transitioning to working and living in a new country. NANB has partnered with NBCC and CCNB to help you transition from a professional perspective. The additional learning activities are to help you become familiar with the specific accountabilities to practicing as an RN in NB.
How many times can I take the NCLEX-RN exam as a GN?
After you have completed all conditions particular to your pathway (zones 2,3,4,5), you may write the NCLEX-RN exam as a graduate nurse (GN).
All conditions must be successfully completed within 1 year under your TRP, after which you will be eligible for a TRP (without conditions) every 6 months for a maximum of 2 years, during which you can apply to write the NCLEX-RN exam.
If unsuccessful, you may continue to write NCLEX-RN exam, but you may no longer work with a TRP.
You must leave 45 days between each NCLEX-RN attempt (as per Pearson VUE), for more information regarding the NCLEX-RN exam please review the following resources for test takers- Pearson VUE
I was advised of my eligibility to write the NCLEX-RN, has that changed?
If you were given the eligibility to write NCLEX-RN with NANB, you will still be able to write. IEN applicants were given six (6) months of eligibility to write and pass the NCLEX -RN. If not written in that period, or unsuccessful, candidates require either an Inspire Global assessment at www.inspireassessments.org/ or Bridging with NBCC/CCNB. NB CRIB Program (nbcc.ca)
I am currently an RN, why am I being asked to take courses?
The purpose of additional courses and mandatory learning activities is to help you adapt to working as an RN in a new practice environment. There are many challenges associated with transitioning to working and living in a new country. NANB has partnered with NBCC and CCNB to help you transition from a professional perspective. The additional learning activities are to help you become familiar with the specific accountabilities to practicing as an RN in NB.
I have been told that I must complete NBCC or CCNB courses. How do I get started?
If your registration process includes mandatory courses, they will be provided by either NBCC or CCNB. These courses must be completed before you can receive your Temporary Registration Permit (TRP).
NANB will notify you by email once you’ve been referred to the appropriate educational institution. After that, the institution will contact you directly with the next steps and course start dates.
Please note that NANB cannot provide information about course schedules, as these are managed by our partner institutions.
How much do the courses cost and are the costs covered?
NANB cannot comment on the costs of courses, as they are delivered by our partners at NBCC. For the most up-to-date information related to courses, please visit: NB CRIB Program (nbcc.ca)
NANB does not cover any costs associated with applications or mandatory education. If you are an approved candidate of the IEN Navigation Service, the cost of the courses may be covered. Please contact the IEN Navigation Service Team for more information.
How long will the NBCC or CCNB courses take?
The length of courses depends on the number of courses you are required to take. These courses are delivered by NBCC and CCNB, and NANB cannot comment on or provide information related to specific course timelines or start dates. For more information related to your courses, please contact NBCC directly.
Will I receive a TRP while I am taking the mandatory courses?
No. You will receive your TRP after you have successfully completed your mandatory courses. For more information on the steps in your process, please review the NANB Registration Requirements for IENs.
As part of the registration process, the Nurses Association of New Brunswick (NANB) requires all applicants to provide a recent (obtained and dated within the last 6 months) criminal record check (CRC).
This requirement helps NANB determine if more information is needed to assess suitability for registration.
NANB only accepts online CRCs from a secure third-party criminal record check provider.
In the case of CRCs from other sources, such as the local police or RCMP, NANB requires the original stamped copy to be mailed to 165 Regent Street, Fredericton, NB E3B 7B4.
Criminal record checks are valid for 6 months from the date of issue.
How do I obtain an online CRC?
Obtain a current CRC through an online service such as CSI Screening, or My Back Check. Go to CSI Background Screening or Online Criminal Record Check | Canadian Background Check, follow the instructions to complete the CRC application (Canadian/ International or both), and indicate “NANB” as the company. The service must communicate the results directly to NANB.
Can I complete an online CRC from a service based outside of Canada?
It is best that you do not complete an online CRC service based outside of Canada as most services will deliver the CRC to an applicant only. NANB will not accept an email with a copy of a CRC acquired in this way, due to the inability to verify validity.
When should I complete my CRC?
It is recommended that you obtain your CRC only when asked by NANB. NANB will ask you when it becomes time for you to practice in a clinical setting (GN/RN). A criminal record check is only valid for six months after it is issued.
I recently completed a criminal record check. How long is it valid?
For NANB’s purposes, a check is valid for six months from the date it is issued. If you have a check and it expires before you meet all other registration requirements, then you will have to submit an updated check to complete your registration.
Do I need to supply a criminal record check to NANB before I can write an exam?
No, Applicants are not required to provide a check before writing an exam including their registration (NCLEX-RN) or jurisprudence examinations.
Do I need to ask specifically for a vulnerable sector check (VSC)
Unless specifically asked for, a VSC is not required. A VSC is done for positions that involve volunteering or employment with an organization that works directly with children or vulnerable adults.
I have lived and worked in multiple states in the United States of America (USA). Can I do a CRC with a Canadian online service.
No, if you have lived and worked in multiple states in the USA. You must obtain a full USA CRC check. This check is usually completed with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.). This check requires you to obtain fingerprints. You may be able to have your fingerprints taken at a local police station. NANB cannot provide details of this test as it is only completed by the FBI. National Fingerprint Based Background Checks Steps for Success — FBI.
I have lived and worked in a country that does not provide CRC once I am no longer resident. Can I send you the CRC I obtained before I left that country even if it is older than six months.
No, for NANB’s purposes, a check is valid for six months from the date it is issued. Please obtain a current CRC through an online service such as CSI Screening, or My Back Check (see process above).
