Fredericton, NB, March 23, 2026: The College of Nursing of New Brunswick (CNNB) joins Nursys Canada, a database that enables participating Canadian regulatory bodies to access real-time regulatory information of applicants and nurses who are or have been registered and licensed as a nurse elsewhere in Canada as well as the US. The College, like other regulatory bodies, relies on information from other jurisdictions when making registration and licensing decisions of applicants.
“We value our role as a nurse regulator, and take our mandate to protect the public seriously,” says Chad Doucet, CNNB President. “Nursys Canada increases public protection of New Brunswickers and data sharing with our Canadian counterparts.”
Nursys Canada is part of a Pan-Canadian effort to enable cross-jurisdictional collaboration. By assigning a unique identifier to each nurse in the country, Nursys Canada simplifies registration verification of nurses registered in multiple jurisdictions. It also promotes stronger coordination between regulatory bodies across provinces and territories.
Recognized by Health Canada as a national priority with a $2.5 million investment, Nursys Canada will also assist in better understanding the national workforce in addition to supporting the overall safety of the public. CNNB has been working toward implementation of Nursys Canada since 2024 and joins nursing regulators in British Columbia, Ontario, and the Yukon as Canadian users. Other Canadian nursing regulators will implement in a phased approach.
"New Brunswick is taking another meaningful step toward improving healthcare for New Brunswickers. Better workforce data and streamlined processes for nurses will help reduce staffing gaps, strengthen planning, and ultimately ensure New Brunswickers receive the care they need, when and where they need it,” says Premier Susan Holt.
The original Nursys database was developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Nursys Canada is a stand-alone, secure, Canadian-based system. It complies with Canadian privacy laws and best practices in data security. This update is for awareness only and no action is required of RNs and NPs.
