In 2018, nurse practitioners (NPs) were given authority to prescribe methadone. To date, there are two NPs actively involved in prescribing methadone for opioid dependence. NPs desiring to prescribe methadone must successfully complete an application process with NANB. Pharmacists and other healthcare professionals can verify if a NP has this authority through the registration verification option on the NANB website.
In September, CAMH made available an online version of their Opioid Dependence Treatment (ODT) course for NPs in New Brunswick. Please see the Fact Sheet for additional information about prescribing methadone.
