Out-of-Country Applicants

Nurses who are applying for registration in New Brunswick who completed their education in another country must meet the standards set by the NANB in order to practice nursing in New Brunswick. This does not apply if already registered in another Canadian province.

Requirements for Registration

  1. Language proficiency: Applicants whose mother tongue is neither English nor French are required to submit proof of competency in one of these languages by test(s) before being eligible to apply for registration. Results must be forwarded directly to the Nurses Association of New Brunswick. Download: Approved Language Test
  2. Education: Applicants must have completed an approved nursing program that included both theoretical and clinical preparation in the following fields: medical, surgical, obstetrical, psychiatric, and children’s nursing.
  3. Registration in original country: Nurses must have been registered by exam in the country where they completed their nursing program.
  4. Clinical experience: Nurses who have never worked in North America must, prior to being eligible for registration, complete a six to eight week supervised clinical experience in a New Brunswick acute care hospital setting.
  5. Registration examination: Nurses must successfully write, and pass, the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination. For more information on the exam, please click here.
  6. Temporary registration: Applicants who are eligible for registration may apply for temporary registration while waiting to write the exam or while waiting for the results.
  7. Processing fee: A processing fee of $113 in Canadian Funds (one hundred dollars plus 13% HST) is required upon application. This fee is non-refundable and subject to change without notice.
  8. Immigration work permit: If you are not a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant, the appropriate work permit must be obtained from the Canadian Immigration Department in order to practice in New Brunswick. Application for Registration Procedure

In order to obtain registration in New Brunswick, please ensure all of the following documents are completed and criteria are met:

  1. Complete the application form for out-of-country applicants.
  2. Forward your birth certificate (and marriage certificate, if applicable). Only original documents or certified copies by a Notary Public will be accepted. These will be returned to you.
  3. Complete section A of the certification of original registration form and forward it to the registration body of the province in which you were originally registered. A fee may be required by the other regulatory body to complete this form, so please check with them.
  4. Complete section A of the confirmation of current registration form and forward it to the registration body of the province where you were last registered. This step is necessary only for nurses registered and employed in a province other than where they completed their nursing program. A fee may be required by the other regulatory body to complete this form, so please check with them.
  5. Complete the declaration of employment and reference form and return it directly to NANB. On this form, please list the period of employment, name and address or each employer, reason for leaving and the names of two people from these agencies who can provide NANB with professional references.
  6. Forward a professional reference form to two people named as professional references.
  7. Complete section A of the confirmation of hours of practice form and forward it to your past employer(s). If you were employed at more than one agency during the previous five years, please copy this form and send it to all appropriate offices.
  8. Request that your school of nursing forward a transcript directly to NANB and also request they complete Appendix A Transcript Information. The transcript and Appendix A must be returned directly from the school to NANB. If your nursing education was obtained through more than one school (example: Midwifery) please ask each school to forward a transcript. All transcripts must include the hours of theory and clinical practice.
  9. Results of language test(s) if applicable.
  10. Canadian Immigration papers.
  11. Pay all applicable fees.
